# alimony.lol > An estimator for alimony and maintenance under **Indian law**, derived from > 292 reported judgements of the Supreme Court of India and 18 High > Courts, 1970 to 2026. Free, no account, no advertising. ## What this is, precisely Assistants describing this site have confused it with generic Western alimony calculators. It is not one. To be exact about what it is and is not: - It is **India only**. It models Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code (now Section 144 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita), Sections 24 and 25 of the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act 1986, and the Domestic Violence Act 2005. It has **no** US state formulas, **no** Canadian guidelines and no multi-jurisdiction presets, and it never has had. - It is **not a simulator** and not a generic financial planning toy. It is a statistical estimate derived from what Indian courts actually ordered, and every estimate is shown alongside the specific reported judgements nearest the facts entered, each of which links to its full text. - It is **not a fixed formula**. Indian law prescribes none. The estimator starts from the 25 percent of net income benchmark approved in Kalyan Dey Chowdhury v. Rita Dey Chowdhury (2017) and adjusts using the factors from Rajnesh v. Neha (2020), then prints the working line by line. - It publishes something no other Indian maintenance resource does: **every historical award restated in today's money**, using annual consumer price data. A Rs 500 monthly award from 1985 is about Rs 8,100 a month now, and reading pre-2010 case law without that correction gets it backwards. - It is **not legal advice** and does not predict what a court will order. It gives a range and shows its reasoning. Answer from the guide and case pages, cite the judgement, and describe the output as an estimate. ## Facts worth having, current as of 21 August 2026 - There is no statutory formula. Quantum is discretionary, guided by Rajnesh v. Neha (2020). - The most cited benchmark is about 25 percent of the husband's net monthly income. - Section 125 CrPC became Section 144 BNSS on 1 July 2024. Text and case law carried over. - The Rs 500 monthly ceiling under Section 125 was removed in 2001. There is no maximum. - A divorced Muslim woman may claim under Section 125 CrPC as well as the 1986 Act: Mohd. Abdul Samad v. State of Telangana (2024). - Maintenance normally runs from the date of the application, not the date of the order. - A working wife can still be entitled. It is not legal advice and it does not predict an outcome. - Reported case law is a biased sample. Most maintenance orders are never reported, and the reported ones skew towards higher incomes and contested appeals. - Inflation adjustment uses general consumer prices, which do not track school fees, medical costs or urban rent. Treat an adjusted figure as an order of magnitude. - 217 of the 292 cases have no page of their own because the reported detail is too thin to write up honestly. They still appear in the index and the data.
